第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

A

There has been wave after wave of new openings in Edinburgh recently, from casual cafes, pizza and taco bars to fine-dining, and everything in between. Here are four places that I’m always thrilled to eat at, for every budget.

Leftfield

Every neighbourhood deserves a restaurant like this: one where you feel like an invited guest on every visit. This family-run bistro has wonderful views over Bruntsfield Links towards Arthur’s Seat. On the menu you’ll find the freshest Scottish seafood, cooked with creativity and care. Start with Shetland mussels (£12), then try sea trout, and wild garlic butter sauce (£20).

Pomelo

On cold days I daydream about hot hand-ripped noodles at Pomelo: chewy and spicy with Sichuan peppercorns (£11.50). Chef Jun Au’s vibrant take on modern Chinese cooking is fresh and fun with a small changing menu. Come for the noodles at lunchtime, or in the evening for family-style dishes to share (from £8.50). To secure your spot, we recommend that you book in advance. Spaces do fill quickly.

Montrose

Montrose offers Scottish ingredients at a more affordable price. The award-winning drinks list includes low-intervention wines, homemade bitters and soft drinks. In the wine bar, order oysters and olives, then playful dishes like suyo cucumber, burnt vegetable dressing and egg yolk (£8). The weekend set lunch is a delicious demonstration of this kitchen’s creativity.

The Palmerston

Few restaurants have claimed the heart of Edinburgh residents quite like The Palmerston. It’s a bright airy space, a former bank branch transformed into an elegant easy-going restaurant. Sustainability and local produce guide the menus, with proper starters, mains and puddings. Settle in with a large plate of baked Berkshire pork (£27) with a glass of something delicious.

21. What do we know about Pomelo?

A. It has a set menu.B. It can get quite busy.

C. It takes no reservations.D. It serves only noodles.

22. Which restaurant can you go to for sustainable food?

A. Leftfield.B. Pomelo.C. Montrose.D. The Palmerston.

23. What’s the purpose of the text?

A. To compare food prices.B. To describe creative menus.

C. To share dining experiences.D. To introduce food destinations.

B

Nick Dowling was the only person in the doctor’s waiting room when the practice nurse came out, glanced around and said to the receptionist with a confused look: “I was expecting to meet a student here.” Dowling raised his hand. At 60, he has undertaken an apprenticeship(实习)and hopes to qualify as a registered nursing associate this autumn.

Dowling grew up in Scotland. He graduated from an engineering degree in the mid-1980s, and at 21, headed to the US. He found work at a local nursing home, feeding patients and emptying their bedpans. The shock and initial distaste were so great that he vowed(发誓) not to return after his first shift. But the senior nurse persuaded him to stick at it-“probably because of the level of care she showed for the patients”, he says. He stayed for six months, after which he settled in England and into a “proper job” and thought little more of it.

The “proper” career was in management for a range of manufacturing companies. Rather than having a career plan, Dowling has always kept in mind the advice he once heard to keep his “eyes open to opportunities and have the courage to seize them”.

“I knew I needed to start at the bottom. An ad came up for a healthcare assistant with a team called responsive services,” he says. “It took me a long time to actually make the connection and think: hang on, I’ve done this work before, as a naive 21-year-old. And then there was something about a circle closing ... And there definitely is now, further down the track.”

“TS Eliot wrote [in Four Quartets]: ‘The end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time,’” he says. “There might be a bit of that going on.”

While the original work was accidental, now it is a choice. And although it’s tiring, Dowling hopes to have a seven-year career after he qualifies. As a specialist in change management, does he know why he sought this move? “I value learning,” he says. “And I think learning and change are synonymous (同义词).”

24. What made the practice nurse confused?

A. The empty waiting room.B. The doctor’s whereabouts.

C. The identity of the apprentice.D. The receptionist’s arrangement.

25. What does the underlined word “it" in paragraph 2 refer to?

A. Dowling’s nursing experience.B. The senior nurse’s persuasion.

C. Dowling’s return to the UK.D. The senior nurse’s care for patients.

26. Why did Dowling quote TS Eliot’s words?

A. To express his love for poetry.B. To justify his return to nursing.

C. To reflect on his missteps in career.D. To stress the need for career planning.

27. What message does Dowling want to convey in the last paragraph?

A. Learning requires a great effort.B. Learning helps make wiser choices.

C. Learning must begin at an early age.D. Learning and change are inseparable.

C

Bumblebees can use tools to solve a problem, according to experiments that demonstrate their remarkably advanced cognitive (认知) abilities.

In the latest research led by Olli Loukola, an ecologist at the University of Turku in Finland, the bees were first trained to associate a blue artificial flower with a reward of sugar water. During the test, the flower was moved to the ceiling of a transparent chamber whose ceiling was too high for them to reach, but with insufficient space for them to hover (盘旋).A ball was also introduced into the chamber. To reach the flower, the bee had to roll the ball under it and climb on top -a behavioural sequence they had never been trained to perform.

In the most basic version of the test, 95% of the bees were successful in reaching the flower. A question remained, however, about whether the bees were really solving the problem. An alternative possibility was that the bees simply enjoyed the sensation of rolling a ball along and - separately - were attracted towards the blue dot, meaning that theyfortuitously ended up positioning the ball in the right spot.

To test this, the scientists put the bees through increasingly complex versions of the challenge. In the final setup, the bees were allowed to explore a left and right chamber, one of which featured the artificial flower, before the ball was introduced. The scientists then illuminated (照亮)the chamber with red light, preventing the bees from seeing the blue flower, and introduced the ball. To complete the task, the bees needed to recall the location of the flower and position the ball beneath it.

This time, some 80% of the bees rolled the ball under the blue circle, convincing Loukola that the bees had solved the problem spontaneously. It’s a first, he says, for an insect with a brain the size of a sesame seed.

The cognitive flexibility that Loukola’s individual bees demonstrated may pay off in the wild when environmental conditions change suddenly. “Today they might find flowers from here, but tomorrow those flowers are not blooming anymore,” says Loukola. “If the workers can flexibly find new ways to get food for the colony, that’s the skill that they need to have.”

28. What task did researchers set for the bees?

A. Reaching the blue flower.B. Hovering above the ceiling.

C. Getting a sip of sugar water.D. Rolling the ball into the chamber.

29. What does the underlined word “fortuitously” in paragraph 3 mean?

A. Surprisingly.B. Tirelessly.C. Cautiously.D. Accidentally.

30. What was the function of the red light in the chamber?

A. Making the ball invisible.B. Brightening up the chamber.

C. Blocking the blue flower from view.D. Confusing the left and right chambers.

31. What does the last paragraph focus on?

A. The implication of the findings.B. Possible direction for further study.

C. A call for protecting animal habitats.D. Genuine concern about bees’ survival.

D

Like all AI-generated art, creative writing crafted by a bot seems to be missing something fundamentally human. But as AI-generated content advances and becomes harder and harder to distinguish from human-made work, is people’s distaste for robot writing based on the product itself, or merely on how it was made?

A new study suggests the latter: Though readers give preference to stories they think are written by humans, ultimately, they like AI-written pieces the best. The study, published by Cambridge University Press, asked 1,682 adult participants to read one of six short stories. Three of the stories were written by humans. The other three were generated by ChatGPT, each with a similar topic and style to one of the human-written samples. Each reader was told whether the story they read was written by a human or by AI—but they weren’t always told the truth.

Overall, readers rated short stories written by artificial intelligence higher than those penned by published authors, and most could not tell which was which. When participants were told the AI stories were written by humans, they gave them even higher scores, regardless of their actual origin.

One of the study’s authors, Skolnick Weisberg of Villanova University, said that public assumptions about AI’s capabilities are increasingly out of date. “We assume creative writing requires uniquely human qualities, which leads people to underestimate AI’s capabilities,” she said.

AI-generated writing is trained on human work, and this experiment specifically called for AI stories based on human-written narratives. What, then, makes AI writing more appealing to readers? Weisberg thinks it may have to do with AI writing’s tendency to be “clearer, more direct, and easier to process,” she said. “By contrast, human-written stories are often more subtle (难捉摸的)and complex.”

But even Weisberg reasons that artificial intelligence can never truly stand in for human writers. “We may need to make room for AI-generated novels, and for AI/human co-written novels, but that doesn’t mean that there’s no longer space for us to appreciate the process of human creativity,” she said. “Humans write as a form of creative self-expression or to challenge ourselves, or to make sense of our experiences. The fact that AI can generate humanlike stories doesn’t change any of that.”

32. Why does the author raise the question in the opening paragraph?

A. To question people’s judgment.B. To introduce the topic to explore.

C. To criticize AI’s poor writing quality.D. To change people’s perception of AI writing.

33. What can be inferred from the new study?

A. Readers didn’t give their true ratings.B. Readers could tell human from AI writing.

C. There was a bias toward human authorship.D. Each story was labeled with its actual origin.

34. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 5?

A. What sets AI writing apart.B. Where AI writing needs improving.

C. Which AI stories are more engaging.D. How AI stories should be more human.

35. What does Weisberg think of human writing?

A. It should become clearer like AI.B. It serves unique human purposes.

C. It is less creative than AI writing.D. It will be eventually replaced by AI.

How to Teach Children the Value of Hard Work

In teaching children hard work, what we are really talking about is building self-confidence and perseverance when something is difficult. Teaching children hard work also encourages children to try new things. Here are some tips on teaching children the value of hard work.

Praise the effort more than the accomplishment.

If a child is praised more for being naturally good at doing a handstand (倒立) than when they work hard but fail at the monkey bars, they’re learning that better outcomes come from doing things that are easy.  36  This will help them learn that hard work, effort, and practice is valued as much as the actual outcome.

● Give specific praise.

37   When you praise your child, be specific about what you would like them to continue doing.“I like how you didn’t give up even after you fell off the monkey bars. You can do it!” Effort-specific praise lets your child know that you notice the work they are putting in and positively reinforces that effort.

● Coach your child instead of taking over.

A coach’s job is to help develop skills. Instead of jumping in to finish something when your child struggles, ask yourself what tool or mindset can help them be successful. 38  Consider a child struggling to buckle (扣紧) the seatbelt because the jacket keeps getting caught. Coach your child to identify the problem and figure out a solution.

39

Tell your child stories of times when you thought about giving up but decided to try again instead, or about a mistake you made and how you solved the problem. Also encourage your children to talk to you about things in their life that they work hard at. These conversations help fuel the thought processes behind hard work and determination.

Teaching your child the value of hard work can have a really positive impact on their future. Hard work is not a burden placed on children.40   It’s essential for children to understand this in order to reach their fullest potential.

A. Show by example.

B. Do it the same day, every day.

C. It is a gift that prepares them for life.

D. This will require patience on your part.

E. Be sure to adjust your expectations accordingly.

F. Instead, praise your child when he tries again after failing.

G.“Good job” doesn’t teach a child exactly what they did right.

第二节(满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

By the time I’d realized my Kindle was gone, I was already on my next flight. The year was 2014 and I was treating myself to a trip to South Africa before starting my first graduate job, but this was not an auspicious (吉兆的) beginning. I’d left the Kindle in the seat pocket in front of me during the 14-hour Sydney to Johannesburg leg and I was horrified.

My e-reader was my constant companion and comfort, living under my pillow after I read myself to sleep every night. I had spent months curating (精心挑选) a selection of my favourite books, and now it was gone. Still, I was almost in Cape Town, and I couldn’t let it ruin my holiday. To me, South Africa was both foreign and familiar, the place of my parents’ birth but not my own.

A few days later, my phone pinged (响了一下). An unauthorized user had tried to send a document to my Kindle account. A Google search of the email suggested it belonged to a young man from Pakistan. I thought it curious that my Kindle had resurfaced with a person who, like me, was from somewhere far away from the place it had been lost. I wondered what had brought him to South Africa and if he found the country as beautiful and vibrant as I did. I sent him an email, asking if he had found my Kindle and, if so, could he please return it.

Almost instantly, I received a reply. He had bought the Kindle from someone and loved my book collection. He asked if he could keep it — he’d be happy to pay me for it but, if not, he would return it. I was touched by his enthusiasm for my book collection. Now that there was a prospect of getting my beloved Kindle back, I was eager to seize it.

(1)写作词数应为150个左右;

(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。

I replied, thanking him for his honesty.

In the end, we met in person.
