Last Sunday, I experienced a common memory problem. I drove to the shopping centre, parked, and walked inside. The moment I passed through the doors, I stopped. I had completely forgotten why I was there. I stood in the busy street, with my mind a complete 1. This wasn’t the first time. I decided it was time to 2 this problem seriously.

I found a quiet corner in a café and searched online. I learned that our working memory has limited 3, like a small basket. It can only hold so much at once. To remember more, you need to move things to long-term memory. A useful 4 is “chunking”—grouping different information together. For example, it’s easier to 5 the number sequence 14921663 if you see it as 1492 and 1663, two important historical years.

Excited, I wanted to 6 this method right away. My chance came when my grandfather asked me to help him 7 his old stamp collection. There were hundreds, from all over the world. I felt worried. Then, I remembered chunking. I didn’t try to remember each stamp. Instead, I 8 them by colour and then by country. The red ones from England, the blue ones from France… Suddenly, the task seemed possible. I was 9 in the information, not just seeing it.

This small success changed my10. I started using the idea elsewhere. When learning a list of words, I would 11 words with similar meanings. I also learned that stress is bad for memory. A calm mind, like a 12 lake, shows information clearly. If I am in a hurry, I will take a deep breath first. 13, before I leave home, I recall my keys, wallet, and phone. I haven’t had such a bad moment since.

Memory isn’t about 14 forgetting. It’s about developing good 15 to find what you’ve stored. That day at the mall, I finally remembered I needed batteries. More importantly, I found a way to better manage my own mind, and that was the real find.

In 1970, China had the 7 nuclear submarine, Long March No. 1, and became the fifth nation to have a nuclear submarine.

Besides, China shared this technology with many poor countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, helping millions of hungry people live better lives. This was exactly what Yuan hoped for, and his dream of spreading hybrid rice worldwide is gradually coming true.

Yuan received many top honors, including China’s Medal of the Republic and the World Food Prize. He passed away in 2021, at the age of 91. Huang Xuhua was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. When he was young, he saw the hard times of his country under foreign attacks. These sad memories made him study hard. He made a promise to make the country strong with his knowledge.

In the 1950s, when China started to develop nuclear submarines (核潜艇), it was a very difficult job. Huang was not afraid and stood up bravely. There was not much advanced technology or many resources. It was like climbing a very steep mountain. But he and his team took on this challenge. To keep the project secret, they stopped contacting the outside world, even their families. Huang left his hometown for many years.

During the design process, they met many problems. They couldn’t get help from foreign experts, so they could only depend on their own research. They used simple tools like abacuses and slide rules to calculate and do experiments with great effort. After many simulations and tests, they gradually overcame these problems. Finally, in the 1970s, China’s first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully.

Huang didn’t stop after this big success. He went on to help with the development of submarine technology. His hard work and devotion won him many honors. We, especially the young people, should learn from his spirit: take on responsibility, face challenges bravely, and work hard to make China stronger.

②________

They are like your chemistry friends that are always there to help. They have lots of information and examples. When you read, take your time to understand each part and underline important points.

Experimenting in the Lab

Doing experiments in the lab will help to build a stronger understanding. You may get to see what happens when different things mix. You will also get a chance to practise scientific methods. But remember, safety is the most important, so always listen to your teacher.

Have you ever walked into the kitchen and forgotten why you went there? Don’t worry—your brain is not broken. Scientists call this the “doorway effect”. When you pass through a door, your brain treats the new room as a new situation and clears away the old task.

Memory has different levels. Short-term memory holds a phone number for about 15 to 30 seconds. Long-term memory can keep a friend’s face or a favourite song for years. To send information from short to long, the brain needs attention, meaning and review.

Interesting studies show that the brain is better at remembering pictures than plain words. That is why mind maps, colour marks and little drawings work so well. Emotions also help: a funny joke, a surprise gift or a scary moment is easier to recall, because feelings “stick” the fact into the brain.

Teenagers often think a good memory means “never forgetting”. In fact, a smart memory means knowing how to store, find and reuse knowledge. You can train it: sleep well, review in time, connect new ideas with old ones, and teach what you learn to someone else.

So forgetting is not failure. It is just the brain cleaning the desk to make room for what really matters.

1.What happens in the “doorway effect”?

A.The brain saves every detail forever.

B.The brain clears the old task after entering a new room.

C.The brain stops working completely.

D.The brain turns words into pictures.

2.How long does short-term memory usually hold information?

A.About 15 to 30 seconds.B.Three hours.

C.One week.D.A whole lifetime.

3.Which way is NOT mentioned to move information into long-term memory?

A.Paying attention.B.Reviewing in time.

C.Skipping sleep.D.Connecting new ideas with old ones.

4.Why are pictures easier to remember than words?

A.Because the brain likes colours more than meanings.

B.Because feelings and images help the brain keep ideas.

C.Because words are always boring.

D.Because pictures never change.

5.What does the writer want to tell us?

A.Forgetting means you are not smart.

B.A good memory cannot be trained.

C.Memory can be understood and improved by good habits.

D.Sleep is a waste of study time.

In dry seasons, old elephant leaders lead 6 groups to places they haven’t visited for a long time. They also show deep memory. When elephants meet old friends, they greet each other with joy and gentle touches.

Chimpanzees (黑猩猩) are 7 too. In one experiment, they remembered where the peanut was hidden after seeing it for only a few seconds. Their short-term memory is even better than that of humans 8 some tasks.

So next time someone says “you have a memory like a bird”, remember that many animals 9 have great memories. Maybe we can learn 10 to keep important information in our minds from them.

In the past few years, China’s countryside has changed a lot. Life there is much better than before.

In the old days, villages weren’t developed. Roads were 1 and dirty, making travel difficult. Houses were small and often 2 bad condition. Many families couldn’t afford good food or clothes. Some children even had to stop going to school 3 their families were too poor.

However, things have 4 improved these years. The government has supported farmers by building better roads, schools, and hospitals. With these changes, the countryside has 5 a new level of development. Now, 6 of people live in modern houses. They have clean water, electricity, and the internet. Farmers use machines to 7 crops, which makes their work easier.

Another big change is that many young people who left 8 villages to work in cities are now returning. They bring back new skills and ideas, helping their hometowns develop. Some start businesses, while others work in local factories. Even relatives who moved away years ago are coming back to visit and are surprised by the progress.
